Email from Randy Foley

Hey Guys!
Saw your website at http://www.toledorocks.com. Has great potential.
A few Toledo venues of yore that you missed:
> The Draft House (later the Agora), about 3300 Dorr Street, Toledo.
> The Firehouse, later the Dry-Mouth Cafe, 5815 Secor Road, Toledo.
> The Hullabaloo Club, about 2700 Navarre Avenue, Toledo.
> The State Theater, 2476 Collingwood Avenue, Toledo.
> Twenty-Nine South Erie, 29 S Erie Street, Toledo.
And there was a place on West Central Avenue between Reynolds Road and Holland-Sylvania, circa 1970, that had all kinds of shows, and "all-night jams." Can't see that place's name through the cobwebs in my brain, however.
Oh yeah, Ottawa Park played host to local bands, Toledo's version of the Free Concert Series held weekly in Ann Arbor.
And then there was a place near Monroe Michigan called the Club (later the Borderline; or was it the Borderline, later the Club?) at 14291 South Telegraph Road.
Certainly there were more rock venues back in the late 60s/early 70s in and around Toledo. But that's all I can come up with at the moment.
As to Toledo bands, I can come up with:
> The Buchaneers
> Fantasy (with an old school pal of mine, Tim Robinson)
> Kraack (with Joe Bruton)
> Hair Incorporated (with some old neighbors of mine, Mike & Tony Candela)
> Little Connie & the Blue Beats (Little Connie, later known as Ruby Starr)
> The Raisin Band (which morphed into the Bears)
> The Rogues (with Joe Bruton)
And my high-school chum Rick Fretter had a band that would sometimes open for the likes of the MC5 and the Amboy Dukes, but I'll be darned if I can recall the group's name.
I hope some of this info helps. Would love to see your website take off and become the end-all, be-all of the once-mighty music scene of Toledo and Northwest Ohio. Best wishes on that, and I will check back often.
Stay cool!

IT was,I believe,Randy,The Gigilo"all night jams" that which is caught in the folds of your mind.Where I recall, having braved the Ottawa Hills PD,one could well have seen the inspirational jammer-xcitr Dennis"pudgie"Gwynne, with his gold top Les Paul tryin to shred the speakers of a Plush amp.About that time he was with Yazoo and soon to be Art Attack. Also I recall the Cave on Sylvania west of Secor Rd.,how bout the Carousel I think that was on Central by Douglas.Did you remember Pork and Beans playin At 29 S. Erie they were there several times. They also played at JJ Reinhart's music store at Miracle Mile in the parkin lot. They played a major role in the clean up of the Ottawa Park ampitheater, long before the city poured the new stage, think that was spring '69.I think tony Candela was with Blues Confidential in their prime.which was Pythian Castle time. You could see Them and Ruby Dee.Elan Vital.Midnight Apothecary,Allegion Fields, and then go next door and see Terry Cooper at the Country Palace. That's all for now.We should be interested in the road we've laid for our proginy to travel.

Include The Tabard as a late sixties venue which later became a medical supply store on Dorr St.
The Cave on Sylvania Ave. west of Secor was initially the Almond Cookie run my Marty and Kathy Baez in 67-68.
local bands like Kraak and regional acts like The MC5 and The Pack minus Terry Knight

I think Tom Turvey was the bass player in Kraak and Mike Davis on drums . George was the guitar player but can't recall his last name . Joe Bruton on singing , sunglasses and hair

Another venue in the sixties for music was The University Of Toledo where various groups played in the Student Union Ingham Room.
Local acts like Evolution with Frank Smith on guitar and probably Tony Candella on bass , drummer unknown.
Also Bob Salenger who was a folk blues singer/guitarist student at TU getting his first degree before moving back to CT.
Pat Agosti and Kevin Spieldenner did an acoustic singer/songwriter duo.
Touring acts like the James Gang filling in for the cancelled Doors concert in the Field House and Keith Relf's Renaissance also played in that room.

Interesting site! I was the drummer for a group called Jay Walker and the Pedestrians from 1968 through 1969 before leaving for college. Before that, I drummed with Floyd Folger 1964-1968

If anyone knows where I can get in touch with Floyd Folger I would appreciate the info. We had a couple of gigs almost every weekend. Bars, Weddings, Frat parties, beach parties -----

Another band I remember was Connie and the Blue Beats. I them play outside at Miracle Mile Shopping Center. I was 14 --- she was probably 18. They covered I got You Babe and did it well. She went on in music and changed her name to Ruby Starr. Never made the big stage but there is a lot of video on youtube. She died young at age 45.

Wow. This brings back some memories. I was very involved with the Pythian Castle back then. I had the art gallery on the first floor and was on the "Bored of Directors". Anybody remember Don Glenn? Couple of things: Ruby Starr sang very briefly with Black Oak Arkansas and I saw them at the Farm in some hay field somewhere near Findlay. I used to hang at the Tabard, the Blind Pig and the Dorm. I had a huge farm house on Ryan Road (before Southwyck was built) where a lot of musicians used to hang out back then. We used to throw rent parties with kegs and free hot dogs and 2-3 bands would play in the barn loft. Some of the musicians were Brady Bancroft, Dario Insenga, Tom Pollard, Casey Jones, Rick Jones and many others that I can't remember now. I went to the Tabard one night and Tommy Turner asked me if I had thrown another party because he said his bar was empty that night. We used to get 75-150 people running all over the fields and raising hell. The U of T had some great acts back then. New York Rock and Roll Ensemble, Martin Mull played there, Ravi Shankar, etc. Does any body remember The Band of Fools? That was our house band. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

Oh yeah, how could I forget the guitar player Jim Coaster! He was in the Band of Fools.

The Tabard was legendary in my school, because all the members of the football team went there on Friday nights. And my girlfriends and I were so jealous. All I heard about was how cool it was, the peanuts on the floor, etc. I thought I was so hot, using a fake I.D. to finally get in. Bwahhh. Anyone remember who owned/managed the Gigolo? I remember they had great music, as did the Fa Ba.

The Tabard on Dorr St. Miller dark on tap, 3.2 of course, peanuts were free and leave the shells on the floor.

Remember Tim Tam and the Turn Ons.. "Wait a Minute"

I remember going to the teen nite at the Hullabaloo Club on Navarre Ave., in Toledo, Ohio and seeing Jimi Hendricks. I was also lucky enough to see Tom Petty and the Heartbrwakers open for Queen at the Toledo Student Union, way back in the day. I remember the Faba on Secor, drove by with my dad and saw Bobby Sherman in the parking lot. I've been a very lucky person indeed with the numerous concerts and musicians I been fortunate to see. Just thought of Stevie Ray Vaughn at the Toledo Zoo Ampitheather. So nice!

Oh my gosh! Thank you for naming the Gigolo! I could not remember the name and we used to there after Benny's closed. Does anyone remember the club on Edgewater in Point Place down by the Turtle Club?jt

Anyone remember the DJ at the Zodiac, Faris? He opened his own bar in. toledo. It was a two story place, can't remember where now. It was bigger than the Zodiac and had bands there. What was his name and what was the name of the bar? This was in the late 70's, early 80's.

My band Jay Walker and the Pedestrians played all over Toledo from 1966-69. We played some teen clubs on Sundays and one club, can't remember the name, we opened for Donnie Bryant and the Raging storm. Man those guys had a sound

Rick Fretter was the keyboard player for the Candy Store Syndicate which, indeed, opened for the likes of the Amboy Dukes. Most of that band briefly regrouped in about 1990 as the Syndicate.

Does anyone know what became of Joseph Calvin Briton?

I played in a band called The Penetrations, 1966-68. Played many places, seemed like every week, places like The Club (Monroe area), opened for Bob Seger and also played the Hullabaloo club and was televised opening for Bob Seger System. Amboy Dukes @ the Club, the Rationals and many others, great memories, Ottawa Park comes to mind and the Cave and the place that became the Faba. Went on to play in a couple of bands with J.J. Reinhart cant remember the names but JJ and I became came friends from hanging out with him in his two music stores. First time viewing this site very enjoyable. Anyone know where JJ Reinhart is now?

U of Toledo Field House had some great concerts Steven Stills, Crosby and Nash, Pink Floyd on Halloween. Early 70s. Also met a girl at the Tabard and followed her 2000 miles out west, still here. Fun times

Would enjoy hearing any memories or details of Mr. Entertainers, a club that was at the corner of Lewis Ave & Sylvania Ave in the 70s. It had a dance floor that was lit up.

The Gigolo was owned by Evan Lowenstein and George Wade (Widejkis).
I think they both went west.
Apparently J.J.Rienhart turned religious and is still alive. Probably in his late 70s now.

And lovely Rita dancing on the tables at the Tabbard. I believe she was 15 or 16 at the time. How above Stargate at Benny's East

My old friend JJ Rienhart is in assisted living care at Sunset House on Indian road. I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago.
