Update from Lothar

Gary Rennie's band was one of the first I ever played with.
Actually, I didn't play at first,
they asked me to front the band as a singer.
I played with Gary in three or four different bands.
One of them was "Holy Toledo" with Elaine Caswell
on lead vocals.
In the eighties she did a duet with Joe
Jackson. She is now a session singer in New York City.
I've seen her a few times on the David Letterman show.
I recently got together with Gene Black
and Marvin Sperling, both from Toledo.
Gene is touring with Joe Cocker on
lead guitar. Marvin is playing bass in a Van Halen
tribute band here in Los Angeles.
I ran into David Wilcox in Las Vegas.
He was the drummer in 'Mr Entertainer'.
Also, Scott Nellis from East River Drive is alive and well
in Las Vegas. Tim, the bass player from that
band was murdered in Las Vegas. Here are a few links

Eventually, I'll remember the bass players name.

The bass player was Tim Chandler. He has/had a younger brother Steve who plays drums (formerly in The Watermelon Men in Toledo) and is a pro golfer in Florida from what I hear, and another younger brother Neil who is also a bass player in the Toledo area.

Tim was in Rockestra in Toledo before Rockestra went to Florida. That was about 1982, if I remember right. Tim became a bartender at Studio 1 at Dorr and Secor near UT (where Rockestra had been playing a lot). Their lead singer Greg, was also the lead singer in East River Drive.

Dave Wilcox was in Rockestra as well, but moved to Vegas a few months before Rockestra moved to Florida. He called Tim to come out to Vegas because playing jobs were plentiful at the time.

The way I hear it Tim was shot by a jealous X-husband. Tim had been living with the woman and was in the midst of moving out and putting stuff in his car trunk to stop the harassment when the guy showed up and killed him.

By the way, Dave Wilcox wasn't in Mr. Entertainer, he was in "The Entertainers" who played at a club named "Mr. Entertainer" on Sylvania Avenue in Toledo. That was late 60s to early 70s. The guitar player, Danny, owned the bar. Dave played drums. Larry Hutchinson was the bass player for most of the life of the band, although I saw them with Tim Chandler playing bass later on. Larry was an incredible guitar player, far better than Danny, but you went where the money was to have a full time income from music - and that was being a bass player at the time.

I believe the keyboard player for The Entertainers was Bob Short. And the Bass player for at least a couple of years was a a guy named Floyd from Van Wert, Ohio.

Larry Hutchinson played in Smoke

i was the organ player (dave youngman) who played with larry hutchinson, steve chandler, and john schrieiner in van wert ohio in the 70's. Larry is still around but doesnt play out. Mostly jams at home and likes to play golf. He takes lessons occasionally from Steve chandler, who recently became head pro at a golf club in Cincinnatti. I was in the original Bucanneers with Mike Lamb, Tim Chandler, and Ray Holley, which then became East River Drive. Mike Lamb passed away in 07 or so. After Smoke, i played with George Conklin and Fred Stroupe of the Watermelon Men for 5 years. After doing some radio/tv commercial work, I then quit music for 30 years, until re-uniting with the watermelon men, back in 2007. Still playing.. with John Schreiner and Fred Stroupe, and other stand ins on drums, Cliff schrein, Sam Tarsha, Steve chandler.

The bass player from Detroit Was Rick Jackson. I bought his leather coat. I also bought some of Danny Helou's used roland shirts back in the day.

I happened to see Tim Chandler in Vegas two weeks before he died. He loved music, women, and shoes....

Danny Helou can be looked up through his wife Kathy Helou who is a star at Mary Kay cosmetics. The original entertainers were bob sort on keyboards, dave wilcox on drums, danny helou on lead and tim chandler on bass. Larry Hutchinson played in Smoke, with several different members, and later with Danny Helou. Bob Short is still around town, playing occasionally.
The Watermelon Men are still spittin out the seeds and the website is The watermelon men at revernation.com. We're older than dirt...

I was friends with The Entertainers and bartender/summer manager of Mr. Entertainer. the band was Dave Wilcox, Danny Helou, Tim Chandler and Bob Short. Larry Hutchinson would come in and jam but I don't remember him in the band for any extended period of time. Tim's brother (Steve?) would also fill in on drums and other when needed. It was great to watch them learn a song which often happened during a rare rehearsal during the say when I was cleaning the bar. No sheet music, just the record. Danny would have a good idea of his licks and then they played over and over until they all had it down and would usually sing for the first time that night. I was around them from 71 till 73 and would love a 50 year reunion. you can find Dave and Bob on facebook.

Hiya Rick! If you are on FaceBook, you can reach Larry and Bob from my friend's list. Keep in mind that Larry is listed under "Lawrence Hutchison" and Bob is listed under "Robert Short". Larry doesn't get on that often but Bob is generally on daily! I hope this helps you find them. Peace always!
